It is safe to say that most people start the new year by making resolutions in order to improve in different areas of their lives. Most common promises are to eat healthier, to work out more or to reconnect with those who have been out of reach for a while. However, it is also safe to say that most of these resolutions die as soon as they are born, because they lack depth and, more importantly, they lack a true intention of change.
So what if, for 2019, we don´t start with resolutions, but with truly meaningful purposes to incorporate good things into our lives? Stop with the whole dieting thing and, instead, focus on eating clean with a purpose and keeping a journal of your meals and progress. The point is being conscious of what you want to achieve and try to pursue a larger goal than just a couple of pounds less in your scale.
How can you start a new year with purposes instead of resolutions? Start by digging deeper within yourself. Have you always wanted to start taking more care of yourself at the gym? Don’t do it because you have the wedding of your friend next summer, do it because you want to look good for yourself. Do you want to try yoga or any other discipline because it’s trendy? Try harder, and look for something you can really connect with. In general, it is all about following steps, some that we lay out here for you to have a very mindful 2019, full of personal achievements.
It is that time of the year again. The moment in which we have to put away all our linen shirts, our short skirts, and light clothes… and start doing layers and planning outfits with one or two items more. Fall is sometimes the perfect transition time for us to start getting ready for the cold, but it is also the time of the year when the fashion calendar changes when the trends pivot towards darker colors and thicker textures, just to protect ourselves…
We have spoken many times about how boho is a lifestyle, one that gets a fresh breath of air every couple of seasons and remains timeless. This fall, boho is still relying on those basic pieces that you can wear all year round, but with beautiful details that emerge from time to time. If you are considering a few additions to your wardrobe, coming this fall, or if you are expanding your bohemian pieces, this list will help you get those items that are going to become your new statements and the new basics of your closet that will never get old.
Play with neutrals: As soon as it gets a little chilly, people move to darker colors. It is not just a trend or an instinct, the reason behind this is that light-colored fabrics (such as white) reflect the light and bounce it, while the dark ones absorb it, making you feel warm, something you certainly don’t want over the summer, but that is appreciated as the temperature goes down. However, black is not as much as a neutral for boho as we can say of others like tan, which evolves in darker shades of chocolate brown; and navy blue, as well as other playful tones such as blush pink and olive green. Make these the base of your look and work it from there with accessories.
Fringes: We have seen them everywhere lately and, unlike other seasons in the 2000s, looks like fringes are staying for at least one more year. The good news for us boho souls is that they go perfectly with the wild spirit of our style, and they are a great addition to your bohemian closet. If you are thinking about just starting with fringes, take them in small doses: accessories like a jacket or your ankle boots are a good way to start, and then you can move on to something like a vest. Of course, if you want to go full on, we support it.
Elaborated embroidery: The best part about wearing boho is that you get to discover the work of artisans from all over the world. Embroideries are part of the DNA of this style, and they’re a constant in home decor and fabrics, which immediately puts them in the map for our fashion choices. This season, look for rich embroideries in a deep blue or olive green base, in pieces that range from dresses to intricate works of art in jackets, shoes or bag. The biggest tip with items like this is to let them shine, something you can do by playing simple options for the rest of your outfits.
Dresses and more dresses: that loose midi dress that you use during the summer can still have a chance in your fall options. For this new approach, think about dresses with a drop waist, those that remind you a peasant dress or something straight out of the little house on the prairie. For colors, you can go either with the neutral option or give a stretch to your spring florals, but also explore an option that has been in the background for a couple of weeks: patchwork. Mix them with your favorite boots (we will talk about them in a minute) and your trustful denim jacket.
Trust your ankle boots: They have been part of the boho playbook for so long that they are definitely a must-have, and we love them for that. This season, invest in a good pair of ankle boots that are going to do wonders with all your outfits. The safest options are black and tan (which are the investments we encourage you to make), but this year is also giving a chance to mauve and other colors with more of a pink undertone. This last option, however, is something that might not be the best for a long-term investment. Look for materials that look durable and timeless: like suede or faux leather. You might be on the way of getting your next treasure!
We have been hearing that we have to be more conscious about our planet and how our actions have an impact on the environment… and it’s not something cliché anymore. Environmental damage is a reality that we are facing every day, from climate change to the different species that are becoming extinct all over the world, to the natural resources (such as water) that we are spending or contaminating, even without stopping for a minute to consider it.
Every time we talk about a bohemian lifestyle, we say it also includes living in harmony but not only with your body or the people close to you, but also with your surroundings. By living in a better symphony with every entity around you, you will be able to cultivate a peaceful state of mind, while at the same time taking steps to make amends with earth and try to keep it for a few more years… or decades.
But how do you change your habits into been eco-friendlier? Isn’t that too much work? Do I have to throw away the products I use every day? The answer to that is no, and not necessarily. While it is true that along the way you will realize some products are not worth the damage they cause, cutting ties with them will be a lot easier. In the meantime, you can start with very simple steps that, once incorporated into your routine, will surely be the way to preserve a balance with everything around you, including mother earth.
Less and less water: You have been hearing this one for years, and when you are aware of the amount of water you’re using, you realize you can do much better. Take shorter showers, don’t leave the water running while you are brushing your teeth. It is also a good idea to do your laundry when you have a full load, so you don’t have to do the same thing three times within a week and use much more water.
Take your bag to shop: We often don’t realize how many bags we use in a single trip to the grocery store until we have three bags holding a carton of eggs. Carrying your own bag to the grocery store is a practical way to save plastic and some stores will even give you incentives to do it!
Plan your meals: How many times have you had to throw food away because there are too many leftovers? Reducing waste of any kind is a big step to be eco-friendly, and of course, food waste is very important. Planning your meals will help you to reduce the amount of food you make every day and it will teach you the exact portions you and your household need to be full and not have any leftovers, which in the long run will save you money, too!
Reusable water bottle: Every time you have to leave your house, take a water bottle with you. You can find many cute and practical designs that you can carry in your purse and that will prevent you from buying water every day, reducing your use of plastic, saving you money and helping you reach your healthy water intake of the day.
Turn off and unplug: Moms have been saying this since forever, too. Every time you are not in a room, turn the lights off. It will not only reflect on your electric bill, but it will reduce the waste of energy that has direct effects on environmental issues like global warming. In that same spirit, unplug the appliances and electronics that you are not using, and also turn off your computer for real, not just by closing it.
Buy local: We mentioned this in the post about sustainability, but the reality is that buying local can be done for almost every aspect of your life. If you buy your groceries from a local producer, you are making sure that you are getting products with fewer chemicals, therefore they are products that are contaminating less in the process. And chances are they will taste better and are healthier!
Cloth over paper: Cleaning your kitchen counter (and almost everything else) with a paper towel is so easy and convenient, but it causes so many wastes is hardly sustainable. If you change this habit and replace the towel with a cloth one, you will definitely improve your cleaning and you will spend less on that specific item every time.
Thrift: Some people tend to believe that thrifting is an odd practice, but what some people don’t use can be very beneficial for you! Whenever you have to replace something in your house (furniture, clothes, etc), try to find a second-hand option that will be cheaper and it can also take you to discover vintage treasures!
Unload your car: Did you know that when the trunk or the back part of your car is full it causes more fuel usage? Next time you are in your car take a quick scan and unload the things you don’t need. It will make your ride smoother.
Go paperless: Simple things like paying your bills online will prevent you to have to print them and pay them in the bank or somewhere else. In that same spirit, and although is not the ideal option for us romantics out there, reading in your computer or in another device will reduce paper use, too, especially if you are a student that needs to print tons of readings.
We have talked about how bohemian is more a lifestyle, instead of just a trend. And as a way of life, you want it present in all aspects of your life: from your clothes to your food, to your beauty routine and the products you buy. And of course, you want your house and different spaces of it to share the same vibe and feel.
The first part about choosing a bohemian style for your home decor is that it can be as eclectic as you like, and it would still go perfectly aligned with the theme. The nature of bohemian makes it easy for you to repurpose or give new meaning to those items that you are not so sure about, and of course to those you want to keep with you but while giving them a new flair. Another advantage is that you don’t have to invest big amounts of money to find (or even create) pieces that will tell a story and that will be the reflection of who you are an individual or as a family if you are creating for your household.
Boho never ceases to amaze us in its possibilities, and it has also become timeless, so it is never late to jump on the trend, and once you’re in it, it’s also very easy to update a few things here and there and have your house look like time never passed. But because we want you to have the specifics, we have narrowed down a few tips to embrace the style and some concrete ideas to achieve it at a minimum expense and the maximum artistic level!
Find a theme: Boho is eclectic and by that we mean it can be a mixture of things. However, you want to avoid your decoration looking like a random mix, which is why you need to stick to a theme. this will be your guiding thread through all your spaces and it can be anything: a color, a special motif, even a material (fabric, metal, etc). Try to connect all the elements of your ideas to this theme, so you can have a cohesive decoration at the end. You can even make sub-themes if you are working with more than one room, just remember to have your thread through all of them and you’ll have your guests fascinated by your decor!
Choose unique fabrics: Bohemian fabrics or fabrics that are inspired by this trend have clear patterns: most of them are printed with unique motifs that represent a culture of a country, so make sure you pick some that go entirely with your style and feel free to mix and match. However, balance is key. If you pick something heavy for your rug or curtain, go easy with the textures on the cushions, and vice versa. A good tip is to use entire pieces of fabric as tapestries or area rugs, or if you are lucky enough to find a piece that is unique and beautiful, you can even hang it on your wall as a piece of art.
Color, colors: Having so many textures in one space can overwhelm the eyes and therefore ruin the whole relax vibe that you intend to create with boho, but you can keep things in balance if you select your colors correctly. The best advice is to have a palette of neutrals that have one accent, so think about starting with beige or gray and add accents in vibrant colors like orange (in shades like rust or marigold), blue (electric blue or even purple) or pink (from pastel to fuchsia). For this particular style, you want to avoid black or something that does not feel ‘natural’.
Details are everything: Bohemian style celebrates uniqueness, so details are the most important part of your decor scheme. Put your own touches there, and you can even build your whole idea on an object or a theme that is very special to you. If you are a traveler, go hunting for those pieces that are absolute eye-catchers, which you would most likely find at vintage stores or flea markets. If you don’t have the chance to travel soon, go furniture hunting at your local vintage places, you won’t find a better source of inspiration. The best part is that, with a solid base of color and basics, you can layer your details and rotate them as trends go by, and you will make boho feel timeless.
Go DIY: In the same spirit of uniqueness, your boho decoration can be a blank canvas for your own creativity. Think about transforming a piece, painting it with another color or even making it look ‘old’ (there are amazing YouTube tutorials for that), and even creating your own pillowcases for cushions and beaded curtains for your windows. If you want to go above and beyond, think about decorating one of your walls with your own art. You can create a boho-inspired mural with your favorite motifs (florals, mandalas), the sky is the limit!
Watch the excess: While this style admits a lot of great ideas, you should always check the number of details you put into one single space, especially if we are talking about small rooms. Keep in mind that you can only have as many eye-popping details as you want, but they need to be balanced by size and placing. Also, check the space after you think you have finished it. Take a step back and look and the whole picture: if it looks saturated, remove or replace a few items. You will likely do this a couple of time until you find the perfect mix of eclectic with a touch of minimalism.
For years, we have heard about the benefits of crafts. Putting your hands to work does not only mean coming up with cute things, it also means that you can relax while doing it. Research shows that knitting, quilting, and making jewelry, among others crafts, help you reduce stress, improve your mood (significantly, if you ask me) and even help you battle cognitive decline as a consequence of age or any mental disabilities.
The good thing about picking up a craft is that opportunities are endless. Everything counts, from doing a puzzle to putting beads together to create a pair of earrings or organizing those photo albums that you have had forever into a nice looking scrapbook with your best memories. In any case, you can get the benefits of doing your crafts and also get things done around your house… even get your friends happy with a nice gift.
Are there any rules when it comes to starting experimenting for crafts? Of course not! However, there are some tips to start if you are completely new to this world or if you want to make the best of this experience and make it into a hobby that will relax you and probably give you an idea to start new projects (maybe a new venture will start right here!).
No expertise . You don’t necessarily have to be an expert on the craft you want to start in order to enjoy it or make it your new hobby. When thinking about starting a new hobby, you should think about what interests you instead of what you are already good at. Have you always wonder about painting? Or maybe you want to do accessories or knitting? The world is your oyster at this point, and you can even go through different things before you actually find what you want to focus on.
Have a great space. Once you decided what you want to do, the best tip is to find a space in which you can let all your creativity go loose. It can be within your house, but preferably not in your bedroom and yes, your bed doesn’t count. The idea is that you get to stretch and move, and don’t have the temptation to be on your back or just go to bed and leave it like that. If you find a little corner within your house to store all these things, you can also adequate it with music and posters, some things that encourage you to get your hands to work. It will work wonders!
Consistency is important. Crafts can be a great hobby, but if you want to get the benefits of it, the best you can do is, to be honest about the consistency of your time to do this. You don’t need a strict schedule, but this is like a workout, you need a bit of it every couple of days in order to get better and obtain the benefits. If you are using crafts for therapy purposes, it’s good to document how you feel after doing it, and to do it anytime you feel anxious, in need of a relaxing moment, or an activity to focus all your energy. If you are constant you are not only going to fall in love with your craft and get great at it, you will also come to it by instinct and feel amazing.
Don’t overdo yourself. It is called a hobby for a reason. While it is good that you gain consistency, you don’t require to be overly strict about it. In that same spirit, you don’t need to get extremely critical about your results. The point of getting into craft is to have fun and relax, so take it from there. If something doesn’t turn out how you expected, start over. You will have nice pieces in no time, with practice and dedication.
We all love summer, and we have been talking about for long before it started (yes, we have been looking forward to it). However, as much as we love this time of the year we have to admit that keeping up with a beauty routine is difficult when the temperature goes up, especially these days where we can’t understand why is so hot, and our skin gets often dry or it does not look like it should, probably because you have been skipping on your moisturizer because it gets sticky or because you can only remember to put on enough sunblock before going out. And it is not only your skin, your hair suffers a little bit, too. Between the humidity, the rain, the sun and the beach it can be very complicated to keep hydrated and shiny.
Most of the times, it is just enough with putting back on your moisturizer, but there is a chance that these products for your skin or hair don’t hold well in the heat and also that they make you uncomfortable. That is why you have to prepare yourself and do a little pampering in the comfort of your home. And while you are at it, it is great to be friends with the planet and try natural remedies/recipes with ingredients from your kitchen. Most of them only take a couple of minutes, and you will notice the difference!
To alleviate sunburn: if there is a word known during the summer is sunburn, and after a long day of lying under the sun (either in a park or lounging at the beach), your skin will need to cool off and receive some pampering. For a face mask that will work wonders, take 2 tablespoons of aloe vera gel, one tablespoon of yogurt and 2 tablespoons of gram flour, and mix them into a bowl. Apply it to your face and give it a gentle massage, leave it for 30 minutes. For best results, apply 3 to 4 times a week.
A super moisturizer: Oatmeal is not just an ingredient to make a good breakfast, it is also the essential part of a moisturizer that can save a dry skin at any level and put it into your bath. Yes, your bath! Grab a cup of oatmeal (it can be instant, quick oats, or slow cooking oats) and process them into a fine powder. Test the powder on a glass of warm water to see if they are fine enough to absorb it. You will know it’s perfect if it turns into a milky-looking substance with a silky feel. After checking that is perfect, pour this mix into a tub or running water and stir it for even distribution. Soak in it for 15 to 20 minutes.
For your thirsty hair: Coconut oil is a long-time favorite ingredient for hair products, and in the past few years it has become extremely popular in its natural state for cooking and also for hydrating your hair, one of its best qualities. You can create a fantastic moisturizing hair mask, take three to four tablespoons of egg white, four to five tablespoons of almond milk and two tablespoons of coconut oil. Mix all the ingredients and apply it to your hair. Leave it for an hour and wash it off with cold water.
Simple exfoliator: Exfoliating is a must a few times a year, especially after a long season of sun exposure, such as summer. And you can create an amazing body scrub just with a few ingredients from the kitchen, like coffee. Take a quarter cup of ground coffee and sugar and mix them together. Add two spoons of olive oil and for a better moisture break three capsules of Vitamin E into the mix. Apply on your body and scrub it, you will notice your skin smooth and soft after.
Is there any other piece of clothes as feminine as a skirt? Well, you could say the same about a dress, but given that dresses also have a skirt, we are talking about the same foundation of a garment, the basis. From the beginning of times, the skirt has represented women, vanity, and flirting. It’s a piece that has even been objects of criticism because when it first started to make shorter became the symbol of women’s independence all over the world. Remember the 60’s and the miniskirt?
And when it comes to bohemian pieces, a skirt (or a dress, if you want to be more practical) is the essence of movement and flow in an outfit, the freedom of silhouettes that boho clothes are all about. A boho skirt, with the prints and details such as embroidery or lace, can only be described as the ultimate feminine piece, but as we pick one out of our closet, we often face a decision when it comes to length. Do we do a short skirt/dress? What about a maxi one, the biggest reflection of boho; or the trendiest of them all, the ‘midi’?
When picking up the length, most people start thinking about an occasion, but one thing that is better when trying to decide on how long a skirt should be is thinking about age. It sounds weird and a little restrictive, but there is nothing less chic and fashionable than a mature woman trying to play the teenager with a mini skirt… so as long as we want you to be free and making your own decisions, this is a very practical and helpful ‘rule’. As for the other things to consider… we have body type, season, time of the day and more…
A playful shorty: When we think about a mini skirt of any type, the mind goes to a flirty, sexy outfit. A short skirt, as well as a dress with the same length screams movement and easiness, speaks of a confident woman. As we said before, if you are a young woman and enjoy the feeling, feel free to sport it as many events as you can. However, if we are talking about a less casual situation, such as a work environment or a serious meeting, you might want to reconsider. If the occasion, in the other hand, is a weekend getaway or a cover-up situation (remember the post on how to rock boho at the beach?), you can feel free to walk around your minis all you want, you might also be allowed to bend the age rule a little… after all, what is the beach for?
The trendiest length: We’ve been hearing the word midi for a while now, but in case you haven’t, it means a length that goes right above the knee and it has become a big trend that has been in our closet for a few seasons now. This length can be both casual and elegant and looks awesome in every body type. If you look at our latest collection, we have the Kayla and Jasmine dresses in this length, as well as our Amelia skirt (which is one of our favorites because it doubles as a dress). The greatest thing about the midi is that it fits in almost every situation and you can accessorize it up or down if you add flats or heels. Your call!
Maxi skirts: Of course this one is our favorite because the maxi skirt is the ultimate representation of the ‘boho-chic’ style. Every image under this word would immediately transport you to a printed maxi skirt and a relaxed look, also a favorite, especially because of their ‘boho-chic’ vibe for the weekend. However, it can be an alternative for office days as well, are you know how to use it. If you’re a short girl, go for one that fits you on the waist and pair it with heels to add a few inches. Choose a light fabric for the weekends and something more sophisticated for weekdays, maybe the office. Important: it doesn’t matter if you’re tall or short, a maxi skirt was not made for you to let your feet show. Take a look at our Lydia skirt or our Pamela dress, and you will be the walking representation of a chic, bohemian soul.
A few weeks ago, when talking about sustainability, we mentioned that giving clothes a second chance is one of the alternatives one has in order to reduce the purchase of unnecessary clothes or, in many cases, clothes that look very similar to the ones we already have (how many of you have the same pair of pants in two or three shades of blue? See? That is waste…). One of the ways in which we can do that is to actually start using those pieces that we have not been wearing in a long time, simply because we didn’t remember they were there or because they didn’t quite fit (you can take them to a tailor for this). However, another great option that will lead you to probably find your next beloved treasure is the world of the vintage market, magical places where you can journey to the past and discover amazing things.
Also known as flea markets, these ‘spontaneous’ (a bit more organized in the current days) shops are the heart of many touristic destinations and people surf between their stands to find everything from furniture, to dresses that belonged to artists or creative people that, like you, wanted them to have a second chance and decided to sell it. One’s trash can be other people’s treasure, and this quote can’t be more accurate when it comes to vintage shopping.
The concept has gotten so popular, that what once was little pop up street markets now have become famous in different cities around the world, and if you are thinking about your next trip, you might want to consider some of these spots, homes of the most interesting vintage and flea markets that will definitely awaken your thriftier heart and will most likely guide the way to incredible unique pieces that you will love, all while being considerate of the planet and helping reduce waste at the same time!
El Rastro, Madrid - Spain
Located in one of the hottest spots in Europe, this market is legendary for mixing vendors of old and new clothes. The main street is mostly dedicated to new clothes of independent designers, while the side streets are the spots to find hidden gems, including collectibles and cut-price antiques. El Rastro is open every Sunday throughout the year, and also during public holidays, perfect for travelers! And after a morning/afternoon of shopping, you can go around looking for some tapas and beers.
Rosebowl Markets in Pasadena, California - USA
This one has become one of the most famous markets in the world because is often visited by celebrities (Pasadena is known for being the home of many Hollywood stars!), so famous that now you have to pay $9 to enter. Rosebowl is always open, and it takes place in a stadium that can accommodate 90.000 seats, so you can imagine how big it is. In here you can find over 2.500 vendors, offering everything from vintage and retro designerwear, jewelry and much more.
Mauer Park, Berlin - Germany
This gem of East Berlin is frequented by tourist, stylists and bargain shoppers at the same time. The vendors are mostly students or artists, so you can find handmade products and vintage pieces at a fraction of the price. The experts on this place say that you have to take your time when searching for pieces because usually the best stuff is hidden between old doorknobs and other things. The good thing is that you will never get bored because there is also food, drinks and live music to enjoy.
Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, Damnoen Saduak - Thailand
Probably the most particular of this group is easily recognizable because it is the only floating market in the world. And although is not technically a flea market, you can find locally produced fruits and vegetables as well as handmade products. Plus, the attractive of moving around shopping on a boat will definitely put the cherry on top of your Thai experience.
Portobello Road Market, London – United Kingdom
One of the oldest of its kind, it has been around since the 1800s but became really famous in the 1950s for its antiques, which are still the core of the market. These days is open all week (with Fridays and Saturdays been the busiest times) and you can literally find everything here, from clothes to old posters, records, books, and knick-knacks in general. The insiders recommend getting there early to avoid the crowds, which are guaranteed especially on the weekends.
After months of complaining of the weather and learning how to layer our favorite boho clothes to use them during the winter, now it’s time to do the opposite. Don’t you just love fashion? Because that is one of my favorite characteristics of it is the capacity of adapting to different situations, occasions and also, types of weather. And today we are going to talk about this particular ability, and how you don’t have to give up on your bohemian soul during these days of sun and certainly how you can take your favorite pieces down to the beach.
For starters, we need to let you know that bohemian clothes were practically born to use during the hottest months of the year. The fabrics they are made of, the length of the dresses, the prints… it is all thought to shine under the sun, and paired with accessories that serve that same purpose. So get ready to pick up some tips and rock your favorites this summer, just like the first time you wore them!
Dresses, dresses. What is best during the summer than wearing all those dresses you normally don’t get to use the rest of the year? Like we said, boho dresses are the perfect option for the hot weather, but not only for your casual occasions, also for those days when you want to hit the beach. Imagine your favorite white dress with your colorful beach bag or with a great hat to match, plus, of course, sandals for the sand. Think about our Flower Dress or the Julia Short Dress so you can spend the ride to the beach comfortable and wear it again on your way back and still look stylish.
A cover up for your bikini. Women usually don’t take just one thing to the beach. We have a look for getting there (that can be a white boho dress like we already said) and leaving, but most likely we would something for in-between. And while a cover-up is a way to go, sometimes you want to do something a little bit different? You can try a tunic that is open wear it as your own cover-up, one that will look really chic if you pair it with the color or pattern of your swimsuit. If you want to do something extra, combine prints and it will be a huge success. This trick also works for something like our Amelia skirt, that you can also use as a dress!
Hats are an option. There are few items in one’s wardrobe that can be as versatile as a hat, even more, when we are talking about something bohemian like a fedora, a floppy hat or our personal favorite, the Panama hat. The great news is that you can not only use them for every day out in the sun, but it is on the beach when you can use them to the fullest! A Panama hat will be a very easy choice for your beach look, and the color being so neutral is going to make it really easy to create the rest of the look with colors. As for the other choices, you can also go for the neutrals or make it your pop of color. However, keep in mind that the materials have to be light, so you can have your head protected but it also has the chance to breathe.
DIY. Do you have a lot of beads, chains and other stuff that you would like to use in a project soon? Why haven’t you thought about creating a cute summer piece with those? You can literally buy a solid color top (or bottoms, or both, your choice) and create a beaded pattern of your preference! It might sound difficult but the project will be really fun and the result will dazzle all your friends. You can do the same idea on hats or maybe a pair of simple flip-flops… or have you thought about elevating your straw beach bag? So many options!
There is something about summer that makes us all want to be more social and surrounded by our friends and family, enjoying the good weather together. And when it comes to being social, nothing is better than planning a nice outdoor gathering so people can catch up and be outdoors in the great days of summer. People who live the bohemian lifestyle are especially driven to easy-going classic gatherings like dinner parties or brunches that will bring everyone together around a table and share a precious moment. However, there are many ideas out there that you can take and make your guest have the time of their lives!
The first thing that we need to tell you is that, even though you want the occasion to be special, you don’t have to spend all your bank account in it. The success of a summer event (or any event, for that matter) is in the details, not how much it cost. And if we are talking about a summer party, you even have the opportunity to create a lot of the details of your party. So take your notepad and open Pinterest on your browser, because you are going to plan an unforgettable gathering.
The theme is everything. Before you start your planning, you need to decide the type of event you are going to have, that is literally the start of it all. Again, it doesn’t have to be anything elaborated (unless you want to go for something with a really specific theme, like Ocean’s 8), but if you draw a line regarding the theme, everything else will be easier. Even if all you want to do is an afternoon party in your backyard or rooftop, picking a theme will make it simpler for you to decide whether or not you should send invitations or serve a specific type of food, and of course what kind of music or beers will be available to your guest.
Go for the manual. When it comes to party details, the more original the better. Think flower arrangements, invitations, goodie bags and more. During this task, Pinterest will be your best friend, with literally thousands of DIY ideas for all those details. Try to add your personal touch to everything you do for this mix-up, and your guest will remember you as a great host.
Comfort is everything. An event that takes place outdoors needs to revolve around the idea of comfort and easiness regardless of the theme. When we say this, we mean there is going to be people in the sun who don’t want to make their afternoon/evening too complicated, so you must think of easy options for food (finger food and appetizers, nothing too complicated), refreshing drinks, a sitting area with shade and, in general, any way possible to make your occasion something your guests can enjoy without thinking too much.
Enough, but not too many flowers. Flowers arrangements are the nicest way to bring color to an event. However, in order to keep on the ‘easy’ premise of our previous paragraph, you need to know that there is such a thing as too many flowers. The whole point of being al fresco during the summer is to keep thing as simple as possible. So if you are considering flowers, have them be simple and cute instead of something that can look too pretentious. As for the colors, summer calls for very vibrant tones that you can take advantage of, and even mix together!
Plan on the nature situations. If you are planning an event indoors you should think about the temperature of the room, lighting, and so on. We have news for you: there are a lot more details to consider when you are planning an outdoors event. The first thing to check in this regard is, of course, the weather. It is very important that you plan your party for a day where the forecast doesn’t show chances of raining or, on the other hand, will be too hot. These two extremes are not a good scenario for any gathering. After you make sure the weather will be ideal, you have to consider other details such as lighting (for after sunset) and protection against bugs. Yes, bugs, because summer is full of them. A good tip is to keep spray in hand for your guests and even have fans as a party favor if things get too hot.
Terms like “sustainable”, “sustainability” or “ethical” have been flooding our newsfeed for the past years and even more. They have become a constant whenever we are talking about fashion. And for the time being, it stopped being a trend and is now more a duty that both brands and consumers need to take care of in order to guarantee a better system and a better planet.
The fashion industry made sustainability a strong conversation in 2013, when the collapse of the textile complex Rana Plaza Mall in Bangladesh killed more than 1100 workers that were there under poor conditions of location and sanitation, as well as unfair wages. Most of these companies that operate (yes, they still exist and there are many) in Asia and small countries work for brands whose products are insanely cheap when it reaches your hands. So the question everyone started asking was: is it really worth it? Is a life worth losing for making a $5 t-shirt?
After Rana Plaza, different movements and initiatives started to question brands about their practices and the processes that they follow to give their clients clothes, including fair wages to their workers and clean processes to the making of the pieces (reducing waste is included in this category). However, many people think that trying to reduce their fast fashion purchases is the only thing they can do to help, when the reality is very different. We can have a sustainable closet starting with what is already in it, and in a few steps we are going to show you how!
Me with my team in India working on a new collection
-Make a filter and clean. A closet cleaning is recommended at least once a year, and better now that a new season is starting. But what you might not know is that part of sustainable fashion (an important part, actually), aims to reduce the waste of clothes that are produced and discarded every year. During this cleaning, think about the items that you don’t really use, and donate them to local charities or trade them at the flea market. Try to be really honest with those pieces you haven’t worn in years and that you know you will never wear again, and give others the opportunity to wear them while, at the same time, contributing to less consumerism.
-A second chance for old friends. After you left your closet with only the pieces you are sure you are going to wear, try to rediscover those you even forgot you have. Next time you have an important occasion, search your own closet first instead of going to your favorite online shopping site. Every year, an outstanding amount of 150 billion pieces of clothing are produced, and a third of that amount will go to waste… in addition to all the clothes that we throw away after wearing them just a couple of times. Think about this number the next time you want a new top that is the same silhouette than the one you bought last week. Believe me… it works.
-Question your brands. We know you cannot live the rest of your life with the clothes that you already have and that, eventually, you will shop. But if you want to embrace sustainable fashion, changes need to be made. It is important that you make sure the brands you are buying from have fair processes to their workers and that they are committed to producing clothes with less waste. Ask them on social media, their contact forms or any way you feel like it. It is our duty as brands to make sure you are happy with our ethical processes and values. At Blue Boheme, we believe in the work of artisans and in the importance of working closely with them to ensure you get unique pieces that are made with love and responsibility. By being ethical and conscious, we are not only making sure that you will be wearing a piece that is truly outstanding, but also that we are contributing to a cleaner system that would help our planet to heal.
Living up to date with fashion is not always an easy task. Most of the times it costs a lot of money to keep up with all the trends, and it also results in a tendency of buying clothes non-stop, which is not good for the amount of waste that the fashion industry is already producing every year. Part of living a bohemian lifestyle is not only wearing the clothes, as we have said many times before, it is also getting involved in the life practices it includes. One of those practices is to aim for a world that waste less of its resources from the natural ones to its industry resources; while another practice is to improve your surroundings with your own creativity. And what can be better than improve your clothes through that same creativity?
Do It Yourself (or DIY) projects are not only interesting, they can be the fun activity your summer was needing, and it can also be a way of updating your wardrobe with little details that won’t cost a fortune and will leave your clothes better than new. And the best part of it, you can find many ideas that totally go with boho inspiration and which you can be timeless!
When looking for any of these projects, there are many websites that can be your friends, being Pinterest the biggest source of inspiration. However, if you want some guidance or don’t have the time to browse the Internet for hours (believe me, Pinterest can be a hole in your day), there are some things that you might want to consider. Just grab a few materials and get ready to have fun with a lot of people asking you where did you get that new piece of clothing that stands on your outfit.
-Give the clothes a second wind: the idea of modifying a dress can seem easy and fun, but not quite if we are talking about a dress that you just bought. Think about the way you can give your old clothes a second life, so you can wear them again and, also, so you don’t have any risks. Remember, manual projects sometimes can be tricky and not have the greatest results the first time, so you don’t want to run experiments in clothes you want to keep. If anything goes well, you will have a new piece to wear. If not, no regrets!
-Follow the instructions: One of the best advice that you can get out of the DIY blogs is to do exactly what they tell you to do. Unless you are a real expert on the art of replacing materials (same advice goes for ingredients on a recipe) you don’t want to risk any unwanted results. You can experiment with some things such as colors or maybe texture, but keep an eye on the parts that are crucial for your design to work so you don’t have any surprise in the results.
-Do not get discouraged: Arts and crafts are not always something that you are going to get on the first try. If that happens, do not think you cannot do this! Every project, even a little one, is the result of practice and effort. If something did not come out the way you thought it would be, trying again! Or even better, make that one work. You will see how owning up to your work will bring you positive comments from all your friends.
-Creativity has no limits: And don’t let anyone tell you anything different. If you get the hand of this DIY, you can be as lucky to make them into a new hobby. Manual work cannot only encourage you to be more creative, but it has been proved to help you relax and to focus on one task, all while renovating your closet! Soon you can be moving from clothes to pieces for your house, or for your friends!
Is summer without a trip really summer at all? I know, we are not in school anymore, but the good weather should be a good excuse to let ourselves have a break from the routine with a little holiday, even if it is just a weekend. Getting out of the city helps you disconnect with the daily pressures of life, and can be extremely beneficial. In a recent study, 94% of over 400 participants on a survey revealed that they came back to work with more energy after a period of vacation, even if it is a short one.
Giving us the time and space to travel is always a good thing. Despite all the cliché messages that one can read about this activity, moving your body, even if it is to a little town 30 minutes from your house. But since it is summer, it might be a good time to explore a few beach destinations that can be perfect for bohemian souls like those reading this blog. They are perfect for a little escape to reconnect with yourself and to get to know different cultures and countries. Are you ready to book your next flight?
-Kauai, Hawaii. We often overlook places that are close to us because we believe we have seen it all, but sometimes we have the chance to rediscover them, and in the case of Hawaii, eco-friendly living can be the way to do it. Kauai has, besides amazing beaches, long hiking trails, a little-known variety of local-made coffee and it’s eco-friendly! The residents have instituted measures like locally sourced food everywhere and limitations on plastic bags. We cannot think about a better place to stay right now.
-Lord Howe Island, Australia. This is another country that we often overlook because of its reputation for great surfer towns and great beaches. However, this island is a UNESCO World Heritage place, and has basalt-stack mountains born from a volcanic eruption 7 million years ago. If you want to a place to discover and go deep into nature, definitely consider this destination in the middle of the pacific, two hours away from Sydney.
-Cabo San Juan, Colombia. Located between the mountains of an ancient indigenous town in the Colombian Coast, Cabo San Juan is the jewel of the Caribbean. Although getting there might be complicated, the three hour drive from Santa Marta (a city with a perfectly equipped airport) will take you to a place surrounded by a natural reserve, in which solar panels create electricity to secure clean energies. Besides the beaches and the walking trails, if you decide to stay your choice have to be the eco-habs, a cluster of jungle huts overlooking the water, from where you can see the starred sky like you would never see before in your life.
-Little Corn, Nicaragua. 50 miles away from the coast of Nicaragua you can find a little Island to which you can access in an hour-long flight and then a boat ride. White sand beaches, picture perfect spots and coconut bread are the main treasure of Little Corn, a place so peaceful that it doesn’t even have cars. It is ideal for a real getaway, one of those times when you want to disconnect from the real world. Can you seriously tell me that doing yoga in this place does not sound like a dream?
With so many interesting and new fitness routines coming up every week, yoga has been a little bit forgotten lately. However, those of us who have been into the bohemian lifestyle know that yoga is more than just a fitness practice, it is a routine that will help you connect your body and soul, and you grow stronger as you complement your lifestyle with the choices that you make every day.
At one point, we have all thought that yoga is not for us. But once you get into it, there are many ways you can apply it to your daily life. It will give a sense of awareness with your body presence all the time, and it will also help you to stay connected to your mind at any moment while being grateful for the experiences you face every day. Among the physical benefits, we can find some others, too. The meditative state that yoga encourages can help when managing stress, depression, and anxiety, as well as enhancing the quality of your sleep.
Another beauty of yoga is that there is always something else to explore: a new variation to try, a different position, another scenario… which can be even the comfort of your own home. Yes, you can do yoga, on your own and at home. The thing is, just like with starting at practicing yoga… is getting the handle of it. You just need a simple checklist and all the attitude you can gather.
Learn your asana. The first thing you need to do is a good research on which specific variety of yoga, or asana, you would like to practice. Read the guidelines for the one you choose and practice the postures and specifics. There are some asanas that can be more challenging than others, like Vinyasa or Ashtanga, according to experts, who suggest a slow-moving variation, to begin with, something like Hatha Yoga. If you need extra assistance, you can always check online instructor to ask questions.
Set your space. When you are certain about the type of yoga you want to practice at home, you need to set the ambiance for the practice itself. It is very recommended that you choose an outdoor space, which will make it easier for you to complete the mental connection that yoga requires. If this is not possible, just look for a place where you can easily move and it has enough ventilation, and prepare some slow music to go with it. Also, make sure you have the basics: the mat, which is essential, and comfortable clothes to make an experience out of this.
Basics for practice. Experts recommend never to practice yoga if you just had a meal. On the contrary, you should always wait a couple of hours after breakfast or lunch. Another very important recommendation is that, as indicated for any workout, you should have a warm-up routine before you start and a stretching one for when you finish. This will prepare your body and prevent any injuries.
Make it a part of you. If you really want to get the benefits of practicing yoga, you should really practice it. Making it part of your routine is essential to adopt the lifestyle that comes with it, and it will let you connect with the practice so you can follow your improvement. Don’t be too hard on yourself either, enjoy the moments you’re doing yoga and forget about the rest of the world.
The time has arrived, summer is finally here! We suddenly see ourselves planning trips to the beach or long weekends in the warmer weather, where of course our outfits are important. And one thing we need to think about when the summer comes is protecting our skin from the sun. Summer is a time were people loves to get tan and when some of our favorite things to do (hiking or practicing yoga) can get a little tricky if you are not protected enough. For that, of course, we suggest a good amount of sunscreen, and following the guidance of experts (remember to avoid sprays as they harm the environment).
However, when it comes to use your style to protect your screen, boho picks can come really handy. One thing we love about the summer is the possibility to use our favorite pieces on our heads and on a daily basis. With sun comes the need for hats, scarfs and other items, so here is your guide to rock your favorite pieces under the sun.
-Pick the material. We’ve been through this, but we can always talk about it again, the material of a piece will determine the occasions in which you are going to use it at its best. A heavy hat can look fabulous with your summer dress, but it will be too thick for your head to breathe when the temperature is too high. The premise here is to look for fresh and natural materials (wicker, straw), which usually come in neutral colors that you can combine with your outfits.
-Size matters. We know there is nothing more fabulous than a big boho beach hat, especially now that the trend is at its peak and everyone seems to be wearing one (have you check Instagram the past two seasons?), but sometimes you need to pick your moments. Yes, a hat like that is going to look amazing on an Instagram post, but it can be uncomfortable to carry during a trip or to handle during a vacation with friends. If you have the patience for that, and you don’t mind blocking your friends on the pictures, go for it. If not… try something smaller, but equally cute.
-Make it your own. There are a bunch of options for hats and fedoras out there, and one thing we don’t really love about bohemian clothes and accessories being popular is that we all end up looking similar. But the good thing about embracing a boho lifestyle is that you can accessorize your accessories. Yes, you heard me: find interesting little scarfs, pieces of pattern fabrics or even beading that you can buy in the fabric stores to attach to your hats. There are many options to play with and you can even match them with your outfit!
-Scarf it up. There is nothing more boho than a headband, and there is not a bigger trend that headbands and turbans at the moment. Forget about the flower crowns, look in your drawers for printed scarves and do a little research for interesting ways of tie them up to your head. One downside is that you won’t get the shade of a hat, but your hair will be protected and you will be the chicest boho girl in the room!
A new season has officially started! Actually, it technically started a few weeks ago, but it was not until last week that we started feeling an improvement in the weather and in our spirits. Nothing feels better than sunny afternoons and colorful flowers in the street, as we notice how our mood gets a lift and we cannot help but smile more often!
With every new season, there are changes coming, too. In the past weeks we told you what this Spring brings for your wardrobe and your favorite boho pieces (if you missed it, you can catch up with the floral trends here), and today we are going to give an easy guide to welcoming the Spring with a renewed skin and a new attitude. We incorporate natural elements that not only make you feel rested but also make you joyful and connected to your spirit, ready for the new adventures of Spring.
Are you ready to dedicate a weekend to welcome the warmer weather and do a little pampering? Here are some tips that will make you feel like you are a member of the most luxurious spa, in the comfort of your own home:
No rush allowed. If you are going to do this, allow quality time to do it. It does not have to be an entire day, it could be as easy as a facial for 20 minutes. The important thing is that you give yourself the time to focus on that activity for as long as you are doing it. Turn off your phone and allow yourself some minutes of peace and quiet, just connected with your mind. If music helps you to relax, pick some songs and let them play at a low volume in the background. If you are into meditation, you can have a few minutes to do that as the ingredients of your face mask sink in, and your skin absorbs every nutrient.
Simple treatments, enhanced: you can create a whole day of spa with simple treatments and ingredients that you can get at your local store. If you have the luxury to spare a day or a weekend for it, don’t hesitate and take it. You don’t have to go crazy with treatments. Just a few easy ideas would be enough. A nice pedicure, a deep conditioning treatment, a facial… make a day of it and enjoy it, that is the point. Think about it as an experience instead of just something that you have to do and compliment it with your other habits. The day of the spa, for example, have a nice clean breakfast or a healthy lunch, and don’t forget the water with pieces of fruit in it… just like at the spa!
All-natural. In many posts, we have stated the importance of choosing natural components in everything you do: clothes, food, and even spa. When choosing the products that you are going to use, always prefer those that are natural and avoid pre-packaged products as much as possible. Do a little internet research and find out which ingredients work better for your skin type so you can have a nice face mask or a great exfoliator (tip for the simplest exfoliator ever: get a bowl and mix a little bit of your moisturizer with brown sugar. It will do wonders for your skin). When you find out the benefits of certain products of nature, you would never want to go back!
Repeat as needed. When you realize how easy and satisfying it is to take a couple of hours for yourself now and then, you will find space to do it often. Keep searching for new home-treatments or natural ingredients to try on your skin or hair. Feel free to schedule a home-spa as much as you need it and treat yourself without regrets. It will make you a much happier person to face the world with an even bigger smile!
I know… its “groundbreaking”. Flowers are always a great trend every Spring, they have become that one print or shape that you must have in your closet. Sometimes it’s a print, other times an accessories.
For Spring 2018, we find an interesting way of using florals. Either painted or embroidered, hand-application techniques have become a great resource to express your love for the season in your clothes. In the new collection that we reveal to you a couple of weeks ago on another post, we talked about how important the Victorian inspiration was for our new pieces, combining the delicate feeling of lace with other fabrics and the work of our favorite artisans from India.
In the spirit of our bohemian nature, we also paid tribute to flowers our own way. On this collection, you can find our own representation of florals, in both embroidery dresses and boho prints. The formers are a more traditional, colorful way to drive the attention to the intricate work of your clothes, while you welcome the warmer weather and the spirit that drives the joy of the year. The latter, on the other hand, represents a subtler way to use florals, while you combined them with other pieces of our wardrobe and use them any other time of the year.
However, part of living a boho lifestyle is to understand that trends are just a useful guide to someone with style and you should feel free when using floral print (or other representations of these) any time of the year. While wearing them, you can blend them with your own closet or just let them stand out alone, depending on the style you choose. If we are talking about embroidered flowers, the best decision is to be your best floral self.
A piece like our Elysia or Julia dresses, as well as the Charlett tunic, are perfect to make a happy stylish statement with your clothes, so you can either go down the neutral path (with shoes and accessories) or complete the colorful look by expanding the palette. How about taking one of the colors of the flowers (red, blue, or pink) and choose your accessories along? Spring calls for colors, and you can choose bright shoes or pants to complete a bold look. On the other hand, if you decide to go for a smaller print with a tunic like the Bella Wrap or the Kayla dress, chances are that the print is all over the piece, making it a stunning piece on its own. In cases like this, a good idea is to let the attention go to the beautiful print. Tan tones will be your best friends: go for nude, cream, or other clear colors to go with your bag or shoes. And what about a gorgeous hat for the sunnier days? And the best insider tip for the trend of the season: denim. Can you picture a floral top with your favorite pair of jeans or that new denim skirt you’ve been dying to try?
Flowers are the best way to welcome the new weather and season. And as you put away your coats, hopefully for a while, you’ll begin to enjoy the new ideas for your most colorful looks. Enjoy!
When browsing options for clothes, one cannot help but notice that most of the garments we are being driven to these days are meant to focus on the fit and the slim silhouette. Bodycon dresses and tops, skinny jeans and fitted pencil skirts are just a few examples of what I’m talking about. It is almost as if the entire world is telling you to fit your body in a form that is not going to let you breathe or move in order to look ‘sexy’.
For me and the spirit of my brand, freedom is a key element. We don’t believe in sticking with one bodily ideal or one silhouette, because you should have the option of wearing what you want in any way you want. That is also why we feel so connected with the bohemian style, full of pieces that let your body be free while looking adorable and wearing garments with a meaning.
A loose silhouette of a dress will not only give you the chance to feel less stressed about your body being exposed to the world, but it will give you more possibilities to explore when it’s time to mix and match with other elements of your outfit. And the best part is that you can add some elements when you want a certain look to be more fitted and will still retain the spirit of freedom.
However, learning to balance proportions is not just about throwing in an oversized piece, it is a matter of keeping in mind that you should dress your body for the size that you have, no matter if you are going for fitted or loose. An outfit with an incorrect size does not look well on anyone, and that is a rule we all must follow. We also think it’s useful to have these recommendations in hand when trying to dance with proportions.
-Don’t overdo it. As we said before, it’s not just about throwing a big piece on. Oversized outfits have a certain charm, but only when done correctly. Going three sizes more than your own is definitely not the way to go, because it will make you look like you put no effort in your outfit or, even worse, that you borrowed someone else’s clothes. When choosing a loose piece for your body, make sure it still looks and feels like it’s part of your look and not a random choice. This is, even though is a loose piece, make sure some areas like the arms (for tops) and the waist (for skirts or pants) still fit perfectly.
-Two equals or one each. The ‘rule’ for body proportions says that it’s important to keep a balance and wear a piece that is loose and another that is fitted. However, we’ve come to realize that two loose pieces can make a spectacular outfit if we consider the important parts it should be fitted in. Think about our Bella pants paired with our Elodie Tunic for an assemble with beautifully loose proportions, or a maxi dress with a cardigan for these days where you can’t be sure of the weather. If you are not into having a part of your body as a focal point, then you can follow the one-and-one rule: if the top is fitted, wear the bottom loose and vice versa.
-Accentuate. The best part of wearing something that has distance from your body is that you don’t have to worry as much about your clothes to be unflattering. However, we should never forget that clothes are very powerful if we use them to not only cover your body but to accentuate our best features. Make a reading of your body type and learn about which neckline, dress or skirt length, and type of sleeves are good for you. That would be the basis for you to explore all the different possibilities of your wardrobe.
Part of living a bohemian lifestyle means to take more advantage of the gifts that mother nature gives us every day. One of them, of course, is food. When we eat healthier we're giving our body what it needs, and not a bunch of things that are not going to be good for the future. We must be clear here, we are not talking about sizes. You can live happily in any size if you have a good healthy food routine.
I'm sure you are now thinking: “are you suggesting I go vegetarian?”. Well, no. However, it is proven fact that a vegetarian/vegan diet is a healthy chance to give your body a constant detox, not to mention to take advantage of all the nutrients coming from really good food. But I do understand that leaving animal protein behind is not an easy task, so instead of asking you to turn to the greens immediately, we have come up with a list of tips that are going to help you to 'clean’ your food routine, and will hopefully result in a more conscious, delicious diet.
-Start with the basics. A healthier diet has only one start point: fruits and vegetables. If you want to get more benefits from nature, you have to grab what it has to offer you. Most fruits and vegetables have great nutritional value, with important components like fiber and vitamins. Pick your favorites and try to increase the frequency of your intake during the week, try to make them part of your routine with salads or snacks, but the most important thing is that you embrace the change so it won't become a difficult task for you. Sooner than later, you won't remember why you didn't do this before.
-Creativity is key. After you decide to eat cleaner, it’s time to get organized and creative. And yes, you can be both at the same time. The first can come from deciding which meals you are going to eat on a regular basis, the ingredients, and your food schedule, which is very important for creating a routine. The latter is the touch you are going to add in order to make this journey fun and interesting. There are hundreds of healthy blogs out there, with recipes anyone can make. My suggestion is that you make it fun, so the preparation time comes to be your favorite part of the process. Well, before you eat.
-All natural. It's easy to get confused with all the information available on food, so it's very important that you get informed and learn how to read labels and ingredients. Sadly, most of the fruits and vegetables in the market come from not-so-clean sources, like farms where they have chemicals and more, while the products that are supposed to be healthier are packed with incredible amounts of sugar and other unnecessary additives. Look always for the less processed possible, visit your local farmers market and ask questions, they will be happy to guide you.
-Water, water, water. It is incredible how many options we have to not drink enough water during the day: sodas, sparkling water, flavored water, bottled tea… And so on. As much as it is nice having options, we have lost the habit of drinking basic, plain water, even though it is the most beneficial drink in the world. Try to train yourself back to it without adding sugar or any artificial flavors. Your body will thank you.
-Everything in moderation. It is safe to say that all these tips are simple advice for a healthier routine, but no one will achieve a major change overnight. If you want to go vegetarian or change your habits start with small steps. Don't try to do it all at once because it won't be easy or pleasant, and don't punish yourself if you indulge on something that was not on the plan (as long as it is small). With time, you'll notice that the change doesn't feel like a stranger anymore and that you are totally adapted to your new routine!
We have been talking about ways one can approach a bohemian lifestyle little by little, with details like your clothes, your food and, of course, your approach to spirituality. It is only when you are connected with your inner self that you can search for that peaceful state of mind that we know is not a myth. It’s out there… but it is a bit difficult to find when you are doing work, dating or taking care of the kids, all at the same time. But I said the solution is closer than you think, and I haven’t gotten into that yet. Although there are many approaches to achieving a peaceful state of mind there is one that has been proved very effective and straight forward: mindful breathing.
Experts on spirituality agree that creating a routine of breathing with conscious of what you are doing is one of the best ways to enter the path of the bohemian lifestyle, one where the balance between the outside and the inside is one of the most important things. But before you start wondering if you are going to be able to do it, or asking questions complaining about how complicated it is… let me break it down and show you how easy it is to start incorporating mindful breathing into your life.
Step 1: Make it a routine. We are creatures of habits, for good or for bad. And in the same way, you have a routine for taking your makeup off at night or brushing your teeth (both in the morning and night), make space for some minutes or breathing to start or finish your day. Start with a few minutes and, if you can, make room for more as the time passes. Within a few days, you will realize it is part of your routine, just like brushing your teeth, and you’ll even miss it if you don’t do it!
Step 2: Ask the experts. Mindful breathing is more than breathing in and out for a few minutes a day. It consists of a series of exercises specifically designed for you to relax and walk (figuratively speaking) into a peaceful state that facilitates meditation. And as easy as it sounds to get into it, it can be a little frustrating to not get the results or the state of focus that you need right away. You can consult all sort of experts on the matter (several organizations run workshops in different cities, they are really fun!), or find the resources online. Videos and apps are a great way to start and get into the mood, so you can do it on your own!
Step 3: Listen to your body. This is very important in any type of exercise, but especially crucial when you’re doing mindful breathing. Most of the apps or videos will ask you to concentrate and pay attention to what is happening to your body. Breathing into every corner of your muscles will guide you into a whole different experience, one that will show you that it is possible to alleviate the tension of a hard day with just a few minutes of work on yourself.
Step 4: Focus. It’s harder than it sounds, but it’s completely possible. Find a position that is comfortable for you. It doesn’t matter if it is sitting down or lying in bed, what matters is that you feel good in it. And after that, eliminate all the distractions. Focusing will be just a step from there… and you will learn to keep that state of mind.
Step 5: Keep track of your path. Apps are often helpful at this, taking notes on your sessions every time you dedicate a couple of minutes to breathe. If you are comfortable with it, write a journal. Be honest about your improvements, your frustrations, your thoughts. No one has to see it and it can be the perfect end to a relaxing session… and who knows what you can discover along the way!
]]>Spring is always an inspiring season. The flowers, the warm weather, the sun… everything makes it the perfect opportunity to create new things and bring them into your life. This is why spring was the starting point of this new collection that we are bringing to you, inspired by the most feminine colors and the most delicate age of time.
The Victorian era has always been my favorite. So much delicate work with all the lace and the feminine details.
I’ve always thought it would be a great idea to mix this craft with the work of the artisans I collaborate with in India. A combination of traditional Indian prints with lace… the best of both world for bohemian souls.
For this collection, I traveled to Jaipur, the largest city in the state of Rajasthan in Western India. Jaipur is highly recognized for being part of the famous ‘Golden Circle’, along with Delhi and Agra. It is also famous for its artisans who work with jewelry and hand-block printed textiles. I decided to bring the job to them and create a collection that is feminine and floral, just in time for Spring.
Following the spirit of Blue Boheme, our new collection features flattering pieces with loose silhouettes. Tunics, tops, dresses and skirt, all of them with prints in pastel and soft colors such as pink and different shades of blue and purple. Remember when we talk about Pantone’s Color of the Year? Ultra Violet is present here too!
All this pieces and colors, especially this palette, in particular, remind me a lot of summers. Happy colors for every part of your day, and, as always, you can make these into your new favorite timeless pieces. A beautiful printed tunic would go as beautiful with your short and denim skirts as it would go with a pair of cigarette pants and a blazer as soon as the temperature drops down.
However, we can keep thinking about a warmer weather and concentrate on the beauty of the prints and how good they would look under the sun. This new collection has been thought to enjoy and be free to mix and match with accessories. Just a small recommendation: keep an eye on the Daisy white top with lace, I have a feeling this will be your new favorite (it is mine!)
“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination”, said the experts at the Pantone Institute. For many years, this company has helped us figure out where we should place our bets on the next color for the subsequent year. For 2018, the chosen is a mystical color that has come to enlighten our wardrobes with an aura of peace that deserves to be cherished, at least for us bohemian souls.
Ultra Violet combines the beauty of purple and the incredible energy that comes with this particular shade. It’s a blue-based purple that resembles the galaxy and the profound thoughts of the universe. “To artistic expression and spiritual reflection, Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come”, said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Institute, about their choice for the color of the year. Clothes are important. We’ve said it many times before. Clothing is a perfect way of communicating your lifestyle to the world, as well as saying a lot about your beliefs. It’s not just about fashion or what is trendy, it’s about what works for your lifestyle and what you feel most comfortable in. Bohemian clothes for this season have appropriated Ultra Violet in shades from pink to dark purple. The entire palette through Spring until Summer is full of pastel colors. Don’t be afraid to mix them or choose interesting patterns with violet as a base and other pink and blue shades as a contrast. Of course, it’s completely allowed to wear these with your favorite tan colors (the whole neutral game works perfectly here). And just a heads up, don’t miss our new collection because they might be a few ‘Ultra’ surprises over there.
You also have to remember that, when it comes to boho, we don’t buy things to dispose of. With new colors and prints come new ways to give life to these pieces along with the rest of your closet. Always remember to think how you can combine that new top before you make sure it’s not going to be stuck at the back your closet. Also don’t forget to help your pieces make the transition through seasons, with a cute denim jacket or even as one of your layers, like we talked about in one of our posts.
After we explore the artistic side of Ultra Violet, we also must consider the spiritual reflection and exploration that comes with it. If one of your goals for this year is embracing a boho lifestyle (you can check a couple of posts back for that), the place to start this journey lies under the charms of purple. When it comes to crystals, this color represents the search for inner fulfillment and good health. For meditation, it is said that evoking will bring you inner peace. If you’re thinking about your next piece of jewelry that will probably become your favorite charm, you will have a room full of choices: amethyst, fluorite, charoite, and purpurite among others.
Moving beyond clothes, you can actually incorporate Ultra Violet to different aspects of your life. If you are a delicate soul, your bedroom can benefit from things like purple towels or printed sheets. A piece of furniture in this space can also bring a little life to it if you’re one who prefers neutrals. It would be a nice and mysterious pop of color to any part of your house, and it will be a reminder of the necessity of surrounding yourself with the best energy possible.
We have said enough times that bohemian is not just a style for your clothes, it is an actual lifestyle that doesn’t have anything to do with trends (although now it’s becoming one). Being a true bohemian is more than dressing in loose vintage clothes. It involves embracing a much simpler meaningful lifestyle through what you live, breathe and eat.
Of course, it’s also not about following an exact guideline or checking on any boxes like a requisite. Truth is, besides the great fashion, there are a lot of things that you can do to consider yourself a boho girl, or even explore a different and more fulfilling lifestyle if that is what you want. Even if you are not sure about the whole idea of being bohemian, there are some ways you can embrace this lifestyle that can bring many benefits to your life.
Less stuff to live better. It sounds really cliché, but the more materialistic we are, the fewer chances there are that we live a happy life. Material things make you worry more and more about what you don’t have, therefore you’re not able to truly appreciate what you do have (either material or not). Think about every time you are packing a suitcase or cleaning your closet and you say that you have too much stuff. Guess what? You do! We all do! Next time you’re in front of that situation, also think about how you have two pairs of the same black pants, or how you have too many sneakers in your collection. Separate them and think about other uses you can give them (to someone in need, for instance). And when you’re in a store and you want to buy something, just think about if you need it twice.
Create! And I mean it! It doesn’t matter if you think you’re not good at it. If you want to write a song, do it. If painting is something you’ve always wanted to do… go for it. Bohemian people are creative minds, and not always for a profit. They find the way to channel their feelings towards the energy that creating gives and make it into beautiful things. Don’t worry about being an artist, you don’t even have to show it to anyone, you can treat it like your personal therapy, it would do wonders for your inner peace.
Embrace the difference. We are all different. And there is nothing wrong with that. On the contrary, one of the best realizations of life comes when you’re finally convinced that you don’t have to fit in a box for people to like you or to be happy. Embracing the difference (and more precisely, your differences), show you that loving yourself is the best path to take, and also teaches you to not judge others. Everyone gets something good out of it!
Eat clean. No, I’m not expecting you to become a vegetarian overnight (if that is a decision you want to make, also remember you can go for it slowly), maybe that life choice is not for you at all. But one perk of being bohemian is engaging on a more conscious state of mind about your health. And yes, your health includes everything from how you live to what you eat. The invitation is for you to evaluate what you eat. Less processed food, including less sugar and additives, and more natural or organic, if possible. For this step, it is useful to start reading the labels of things you buy at the supermarket, and a great tip is cooking more at home! Start doing research on easy and healthier recipes… it could also be your new thing to create!
Yes, we’re all a little tired of the cold weather, and unfortunately, there are still a few more weeks to go. And if you’re anything like me, you’re probably thinking about the options you have for dressing like your own self while the temperature ball drops.
The good news is that you don’t have to give up your favorite boho pieces to be protected for winter, but you do have to learn some tricks. The key to achieving this goal is just one word: layers. I’m sure you’ve heard a lot about it, but dressing in layers will not only allow you to extend the life of your ‘summer’ clothes, but it will also give you the chance to put on more or fewer clothes depending on the place you go. Because one thing is to be completely covered when you’re walking on the street, and one totally different to be at your office where the heat is at full capacity.
The first thing you need to know is that you’re going to wear a few more layers underneath that what you’re willing to admit.
Depending on the weather, the suggested items are leggings and t-shirt, preferably thermal if it’s too cold. Socks are also important, choose thick ones so you don’t have to go for two pairs and that way you’ll be able to wear pretty much all your boots no matter what they’re made for.
For your main piece (or layer), meaning the one people are going to see when you take your jacket off, you can take advantage of your favorite tunic with a cute pair of leggings (or the second pair, because you’ll be wearing others underneath) and finish the look with your favorite boots. Another cute option is to use your long sleeve maxi-dress for a boho look with high boots. Go for something like our beloved Bali or Cara dresses, and get creative with the color palette for different accessories: go for belts, necklaces, and nothing would look better with this than a scarf.
After you have the idea of the full assembly, the most important thing to consider for a full-winter look is the jacket. The positive side is that the most bohemian piece of them all, the oversized cardigan, is trendier than ever and you can find it so many options! Make sure the coat you pick is made of a thick heavy material so it keeps you cozy all the time without much further work. A neutral tone like beige or gray would work for most of your looks, and if you’re looking for something a little more out there, don’t be afraid to explore print. Also, remember that most of these cardigans are already taught to look a little big on you, so don’t worry about picking up a size up, it will probably be too much.
Now your outfit is almost complete. But the bad thing about the cold is that there are some things you just can’t leave at home because you will freeze. Of course, we’re talking about hats and glove. For the first, you have the normal option of going for a beanie and call it a day, although you can make it boho by choosing a knit hat that looks a bit oversized as well. Or, as we said in our previous post, you can be the most stylish girl in winter and go for a big hat that would definitely tell the world you don’t play by boring rules.
One of the best things about bohemian lifestyle is precisely the fact that it doesn’t depend on trends. This way, you can enjoy your décor and other items as the timeless pieces they are. And this is especially handy and useful when it comes to clothing because as we said repeatedly over our posts, boho clothes can be worn on different seasons, climates if we know how to mix and match.
Though it is also really nice to see that you can be the coolest girl in town with the pieces you’ve always adored. From time to time people get interested in certain styles, and these past seasons everyone wants to have some of the relaxed vibe bohemian lifestyles gives us. Romantic, soft layers, loose silhouettes, and bold prints have found their way to the wardrobes of fashionistas and style icons, and it’s only the beginning, as this trend will be around for a little longer. Take note of the pieces that everybody wants now, and own them more than ever so you become the style sensation among your friends. If you want, you can even teach them where to find these true gems!
A chic-interesting pattern. Ethnic bold patterns are trendier than ever thanks to some of our favorite celebrities who are battling the concept of dark during winter. Even though more than half of the world is going through a very rough cold wave, a piece made of a dazzling color will always be the best way to cheer ourselves up during the difficult weather. Try a vintage coat that will make heads turn, or a beautiful top to go under your first two layers if you’re not convinced about making such a statement. If any of those two are too much, you can always pick some of your jewelry and create an interesting boho contrast with your winter clothes.
Up to your head. Hats and headpieces are a great part of the bohemian lifestyle, and when winter comes, covering your head is a big deal. The first option on the list would be, of course, a knit hat that is really trendy these days because no one wants a tight beanie on your head anymore. Go for a cute option in a romantic pastel color (ivory can go with everything on your closet). But if you like to not follow the ‘rules’ occasionally, try a fancy hat instead of something knitted. A big black or brown hat will give you the music-festival-star going through winter, without mentioning an old Hollywood allure.
Tan ankle boots . Have you ever seen those girls wearing ankle boots during summer and thought “that’s crazy”? I have too because boots, in general, are meant to protect your feet from weather phenomenon such as rain. And now that the weather got a little tricky and that your feet need actual coverage, you can use and abuse your favorite ankle boots, just to give your look that relaxed vibe it needs, or that pop of color through all the black and grey we get to see this time of the year.
Layers on your neck. One of the best trends of 2017 was the comeback of layered necklaces and looks like they’re not going anywhere this year, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. If you’re still not on board with this idea, do a little research on Pinterest or Instagram (is not hard to find good examples) and try some of your most delicate necklaces (with different lengths) together. Go for two or three, to create a romantic boho look that will go perfectly with any neckline you choose .
It’s a new year, and besides the resolutions, we make every year (if you miss our post on New Year’s Resolutions for Spiritual Growth, check it out!), more than one of us is feeling an intense need for a reset-type of vacation. Can you imagine spending a couple of days on a quiet beach or a far forest concentrating on your thoughts and projects for this new moment of your life?
There are different types of vacations. There are times when you want to explore the world, get in touch with new cultures and just walk until you can’t feel your feet. In other moments, you need to lock yourself up and relax with a massage or a nice dinner (for several days). And there are some occasions in life when all you want to do is embark upon an adventure alone, and discover answers that you’ve been asking yourself for a long time.
When it comes to travel alone, there are many things to consider. However, the most important is the destination, because this kind of trip will allow you to connect with your inner self, so your trip has to have plenty of space for reflection and self-discovery. Stay away from the noise, and you might listen to your mind thinking. In the meantime, we recommend some places to do your research and try a different vacation that will give you back more than you will invest in it.
Rishikesh, India. A true introspective trip wouldn’t be completed without lots of meditation and thinking, and for all you fans of yoga, India is definitely the place to visit. I’ve already talked to you a little bit about the magic involving this country, and a lot of the essence of Blue Boheme comes from there. Among all the options you can find in this country, Rishikesh is famous for being a center for yoga and meditation (so famous than even The Beatles came here to meditate along with Maharishi Mahesh). In this city, you can find an International Yoga Festival and meditation centers around the entire town. A great option for anyone who wishes to find themselves in the roots of the most ancient method of all times.
Siem Reap, Cambodia. This province is home to the largest and the most ancient tourist attraction of the world: the temples of Angkor. Highly recommended for solo travelers and loners, is an amazing adventure around one of the largest pre-industrial cities in the world. You can wander around the temples and their incredible architecture, or enjoy the amazing views you can get from any angle of this place. A great chance to try new methods for everything in your life (including your food) and get lost in your own thoughts while you contemplate the sky.
Sicily, Italy. What better place to think about everything than looking at the deep blue Mediterranean Sea? Sicily, the largest island on this side of the world offers you a great combination of traditional European life and great historical spots where you can stay for hours admiring the ocean. You don’t even have to try a fancy hotel, it would be enough with renting a small place with a balcony and I can guarantee you, after a couple of sunrises you will feel like new. During the day, you have miles of beach to explore and hidden spots to discover, tons of mall squares to sit in while you enjoy a book as well as great, home-made style food to try.
Patagonia, Chile. The most southern region of the world is not only one of the coldest places to be, but also one of the better places to explore when looking for options to connect with nature and with ourselves. Guarded by volcanos, it offers breathtaking landscapes and many options that invite to self-reflection. Even before heading to Easter Island, you can find little towns such as Puerto Montt, which will transport you to classic European villas with their mountains and green infinite roads. The best option here is renting out a room in a chalet-style hotel and enjoy bike rides around the town, to finish right in front of bay admiring the beauty of the Osorno Volcano.
Ubud, Bali. Not only one of the most recommended destinations for solo travelers, but Ubud is actually the most creative and celebrated region of Bali. With an increasing popularity created by ‘Eat, Pray, Love’, this place offers both a downtown full of life and serene places to admire in complete peace. The Sacred Forest Monkey Sanctuary is a must, is inhabited by a band of over 600 Balinese macaques and has plenty of trails to walk around and admire the beauty of nature in one of the most peaceful places on earth.
